Crane Barge Services

The crane barge is an offshore barge that has a sheer-legs crane or fully rotating crane. A sheer-legs crane can pick loads and luff but cannot swing. The sheer legs consist of an A-frame made up of two heavy tubulars or trussed columns held back by heavy stays to the bow. We have discussed the transfer of personnel and light spares only to the wind turbines, yet we also have the need to transfer large and heavy components to and from the wind turbines. For this a crane or jack-up vessel is required. The tasks that these vessel undertake vary from the frequently discussed gearbox or generator replacement to more complex tasks that require the hub assembly or worse the entire nacelle to be removed, which could require two such vessels - crane barge service.

At the extreme the required vessel and crane capability is no different from that which installed the wind turbine. In the case of the gearbox or generator replacement, it can be expected that the crane vessel could be of a lower capacity. In reality the height and reach of the required tasks mean that the only vessels that are suitable for the range of tasks tend to be the installation jack-up vessels or, at the minimum, the first generation of these - crew boat service.
